A NEW headteacher has said he is looking forward to building on the progress of his predecessor.

Philip Hurst has now taken over at Thomas Mills High School in Framlingham.

He said he was excited about the challenges ahead and was keen to continue the good work of his predecessor, Colin Hirst.

He said Thomas Mills had a strong academic record, an impressive extra curricular programme, an “outstanding” Ofsted report and an excellent set of students and staff. “I believe very strongly in 11-18 schools that have a vibrant sixth form,” Mr Hurst, who previously taught in Essex, said.

“What I think this school has done well is the progress it makes for each student – it does that from key stage three and four right through to the sixth form.

“Any changes will be evolutionary but what I bring is a fresh pair of eyes. I want to build on the already exceptional achievements and ensure we fully hear the student voice. I’m a big advocate of student leadership and responsibility. The most important purpose is effective teaching, learning and achievement. Education is always changing, it never stands still, so we have to react to ensure we get the very best for our young people.”
