A pedestrian is fighting for his life in hospital after he was involved in a collision with a bus.
Emergency services – including the Herts air ambulance – were called to Hythe Hill in Colchester just before 10am.
The male pedestrian, aged in his 30s, was airlifted to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge with life-changing injuries, a police spokeswoman said.
The collision, which involved a number 76 First bus, happened near the Church of St Leonard.
A small number of passengers were on the bus at the time of the incident.
The road was closed in both directions while emergency services dealt with the scene, and to allow the air ambulance to land.
A spokesman for First Buses said: “The bus was involved in a road traffic collision with a pedestrian.
“The driver is obviously shaken from the incident but is not injured.”
The bus was on the 9.45am journey from Colchester to Clacton.
The East of England Ambulance Service sent an ambulance crew and a spokeswoman said the man suffered serious injuries to his pelvis.
Molly Leathers said she heard the bus braking and then screaming.
“There was quite a crowd of emergency services and then the helicopter came down,” she said.
“It was just a bit crazy.
“Initially we thought he was not that badly hurt, but when the air ambulance arrived we realised how serious it was.”
Any witnesses who have not yet spoken to police are asked to contact Pc Robert Elvin at the Stanway Road Policing Unit on 101.
