Rail services between Suffolk and London will be seriously disrupted on Sundays in September as Network Rail replaces track near Ipswich station.

There will be no trains between Stowmarket and Manningtree on Sundays September 10, 17, and 24 with buses linking those two stations and linking them to Ipswich.

There will be no East Suffolk Line trains going into Ipswich with a bus link to Woodbridge and buses will replace trains on the Felixstowe line.

Network Rail is expected to carry out more engineering work between Shenfield and London in October and November, but details of the disruption have not been finalised yet.

The nationalised company is also expecting to close Liverpool Street Station for an extended period over Christmas to allow it to carry out more work for the Crossrail project – but again this has still to be decided.

A spokeswoman for Network Rail said: “The September work has been agreed but we are due to fix exactly when there will be closures in the autumn over the next week or two.”

Engineers will be installing more new overhead lines in the Shenfield area over the August Bank Holiday weekend meaning there will be no trains to London on the Sunday or Monday.

Passengers will have to use a bus shuttle from Ingatestone to Newbury Park tube station on these days – and journeys to the capital are likely to take longer than usual.

Simon Ancona, Network Rail’s chief operating officer for Anglia, said: “We’re continuing to upgrade the overhead line on the mainline to London to improve reliability and reduce delays as part of our Railway Upgrade Plan.

“We also continue our work on the Crossrail programme near Stratford to connect the Elizabeth line tunnel to the mainline.

“I’d like to thank passengers for their continued understanding and encourage them to check ahead of travelling to see how their journey might be affected.”

Jamie Burles, managing director at Greater Anglia, said: “There are still several weeks left until the August Bank Holiday when people can travel all the way into and out of London by train.

“During the bank holiday weekend we will make sure people can still complete their journeys, even though some of it is by rail replacement bus.”
