A ‘guy’ in the style of Donald Trump will top the bonfire at one of the county’s biggest fireworks displays .
The 49th Big Night Out is set to take place this Friday, November 10, in Long Melford.
The US presidential guy was designed by twin brothers Seb and Olly Skeats, aged seven, as part of an annual competition run in the village for more than 45 years to coincide with the event.
Organised by charity group Project Seven, the Big Night Out has been moved away from the traditional Guy Fawkes weekend to avoid clashing with other events in the area.
All proceeds from the night, which is supported by the East Anglian Daily Times, will go to local charities.
The theme of the musical accompaniment to the fireworks display will be “Rock Hard Brexit”. Around 10,000 people are expected to attend.
The guy competition, which was traditionally run in conjunction with the local primary school, was opened up to people of all ages this year. Judging took place earlier this week at Sheridans estate agents in the village.
Winners received vouchers with all entrants getting a goody bag and certificate.
Taking second place to the Donald Trump guy was The Incredible Hulk, made by Lexi Wade, aged seven, and her four-year-old sister Sienna, who is “mad on superheroes”.
Third place went to one of the competition’s slightly more mature entrants Julie Thomson, 46, with her ‘Lucy the Librarian’ guy.
In addition to being dressed with the winning guy, the huge bonfire will this year be lit using traditional fire-making methods.
Performing the honours will be Sudbury resident, wilderness expert and author Daniel Hulme, who has just had his first book published, entitled The Art of Fire: The Joy of Tinder, Spark and Ember.
Daniel, who is an instructor at Ray Mears’ School of Wilderness Bushcraft, is an expert on fire making and survival in the wild.
He will use the hand drill method – one of the traditional fire making methods from his book – which involves rubbing two sticks of wood together, to make the first spark to light the bonfire. It will be lit at 7.30pm.
