The news almost certainly ends any chance of the former Bayern Munich man forcing his way into Fabio Capello's World Cup squad and raises doubts whether he will ever make a full recovery from double knee surgery in 2008.
Hargreaves had been plagued by a tendonitis problem since his �18m move to Old Trafford in 2007 and finally decided on surgery to rectify the problem.
Despite being closely monitored by knee specialist Dr Richard Steadman, the England international has struggled in his rehabilitation from the surgery.
