Lloyds is to close all branches of the Cheltenham & Gloucester bank and shed 1,400 jobs, industry sources revealed today.
The former building society, taken over by Lloyds Bank in 1995, has a branch in the Buttermarket Street in Ipswich.
The move comes after the Lloyds took over the ailing HBOS, including the Halifax, earlier this year in a shotgun marriage partly brokered by the government.
It is expected that the business of the Cheltenham and Gloucester will be absorbed into the Halifax operation.
