A series of 1940s-themed events will be staged over a weekend in a historic west Suffolk village in May.

The Lavenham Vintage Weekend will be held between Friday, May 18, and Monday, May 21, in and around the village and will also commemorate the 75th anniversary of RAF Lavenham being built.

The airfield was built in 1943 for use by the US forces stationed in East Anglia during World War Two - known as the “friendly invasion”.

Among the many events planned is a vintage fair and vehicle display, a 1940s-themed swing dance in the village hall, an evacuees exhibition in Little Hall - which was the wartime evacuee centre – and a history talk.

The Swan Hotel and Spa and Friends of Lavenham Airfield (FOLA) will host the events, and there will also be a visit to Lavenham Airfield - which is not normally open to the public. 1940s dress is encouraged over the weekend but is optional.

The weekend coincides with the royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle and The Swan will be televising the ceremony at a gala lunch in its Gallery restaurant on May 19.
