POLICE have been called into investigate a suspicious factory fire which took an hour to bring under control last night .

Initially two fire crews were called to the abandoned factory on Boundary Road in Haverhill at around 9pm where they discovered a 20,000 square metre former industrial unit filled with smoke.

They were then joined by two back up engines from Bury St Edmunds and together they traced the source of the fumes to the loading bay area of the L-shaped building.

There using breathing apparatus, two hose reels and two jets they tackled piles of burning plastic and cardboard threatening to ignite the roof.

They also used heat imaging equipment to identify hotspots around an estimated eight cubic metres of burning rubbish.

Fire services had the fire under control and had ventilated the building by 10.30pm.

This morning a fire spokesman said they were working with officers from Suffolk police CID to establish a cause for the blaze.

In a separate incident in Haverhill police are also investigating after an arsonist left a burning bottle of petrol under a car.

One Haverhill crew were called to Delmont Court on Concord Road at 9.15pm to reports of flames underneath a parked car.

They used a CO2 extinguisher and no one was hurt.
