A MUSICIAN who was caught on video jumping around on stage while claiming he was too sick to work has been fined £200 and ordered to stay at home in the evenings.

Rex Seeley, 57, of Beatrice Avenue, Felixstowe, claimed he couldn't work after he suffered a spinal injury and pocketed more than £5,000 in benefits he was not entitled to between 2006 and 2007.

But he was caught on video jumping around while performing on stage and carrying heavy equipment by an undercover surveillance team.

He admitted failing to notify the Department for Work and Pensions of a change in circumstances which allowed him to carry out certain activities.

Magistrates in Ipswich today handed Seeley a £200 fine and a curfew which will prevent him from leaving his home between 8pm and 6am.

An electronic monitoring tag will be fitted to Seeley's ankle to ensure he does not break the curfew.

Craig Marchant, mitigating for Seeley, said his client had a severe long-term back problem but had “good days and bad days” and expressed remorse for his actions.

Speaking last week, Seeley said: From time to time I was better because of the medication I was taking and at other times I was worse - I did try to inform them that the situation had changed and that my medical condition kept altering.

“Perhaps I should have done more to get them to understand that and it was an oversight on my behalf.

“I am guilty and I cannot deny that I made those claims. I feel really dreadful about it all but it was unintentional.”
