FIREFIGHTERS have told how a young man jumped from a window and a second had to be rescued after a blaze engulfed a house in west Suffolk.
Three people - two men and one woman - were taken to hospital after the fire broke out in the downstairs living room of a house in New Cheveley Road, Newmarket, at 2.11am today.
When the fire service arrived they discovered a man trapped in the bedroom on the first floor and used a special ladder to rescue him.
But prior to their arrival, a woman was rescued and a second man, described as a “young male” by the fire service, had leapt from a window.
The fire service also rescued two cats from the blaze.
A fire service spokesman said: “The fire was on the ground floor in the living room involving a television and an arm chair. The house was heavily smoke logged, it was a severe fire on the ground floor.”
To beat back the flames, fire officers used specialist breathing equipment and water fog devices. Two crews from Newmarket and one from Burwell were sent to the scene.
The fire was under control by 3.30am.
