STUDENT Jim Magilton is hoping he can graduate as a top manager after learning from one of the best in George Burley.

The current Blues boss has shown his team can do its homework but after caning Bristol City in the last home game, Town continue to struggle on away trips.

Magilton is plotting the downfall of his old teacher tonight when Southampton visit Portman Road.

“We are up against a side with some very good players, against a manager who is a legend at Portman Road.

“I have the utmost respect for George Burley. He brought me to this football club and we enjoyed some very good times together.

“I learnt about standards, about how he approached every single day in training and matches. I loved his approach because he was very professional and came in every day expecting the highest of standards.

“He learnt from Sir Bobby and people of that ilk and it rubbed off.”

Magilton is aware that Burley is having to deal with a number of off-field problems, but after going through administration at Ipswich, a takeover at Derby and turmoil at Hearts, the Scot is well versed in dealing with those sort of issues.

Magilton said: “There is a lot going on at the football club that could have an effect on what goes on but George won't use that as an excuse. George will be bringing his team here ready to give us a very good game.

“If we are not right and not focused on the job and be spot on then we could lose the game. But we are right.”

The Blues now face a busy 10-match period from now until the new year, with five of their next seven at home and the chance to make full use of their game in hand.

Magilton said: “We have to take these opportunities. We had the chance to go third on Saturday and missed it. These opportunities don't come round very often so when they do you have to grab them.”

Gavin Williams came through his first full game of the season without ill effects, while Jon Walters is struggling with a groin strain.

With Barnsley to come on Saturday, Magilton may be reluctant to risk everyone and bring back Gary Roberts.

He said: “It will be the same sort of squad that has done so well at home and won't be making too many changes from Saturday.”
