A MAN was killed last night in a horrific collision on one of Suffolk's busiest roads.
The accident happened on the A12 at Thorington, near Blythburgh, shortly before 6pm last night and involved a Volkswagen Gulf and a blue Hyundai vehicle.
Firefighters from Halesworth, Southwold and Normanshurst in Lowestoft battled to release the trapped victims from the wreckage.
Two injured people were taken to the James Paget Hospital in Gorleston but their conditions were not believed to be life-threatening last night.
However, a police spokesman said a man had been declared at the scene. No details of his age or his identity will be released until his next of kin have been informed, he added.
Officers closed the road for four hours while emergency services worked at the site.
Traffic was diverted through Halesworth, causing delays to motorists travelling through the area.
The road re-opened again shortly before 11pm.
A spokeswoman for Suffolk Fire Service said it was called to a report of a road traffic accident involving two cars travelling along the A12 at Thorington shortly before 6pm.
Fire engines from Halesworth, Southwold, and Normanshurst attended.
The spokeswoman said three people were initially trapped and two casualties were released by the fire service and taken to hospital.
A spokeswoman for the East Anglian Ambulance Service confirmed it had attended the fatal accident.
The spokeswoman said ambulances took two casualties to the James Paget Hospital but could not reveal the extent of their injuries or whether they were male or female.
Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the accident to contact them.
Calls should be made to Halesworth police station via the central switchboard on 01473 613500.
