MYSTERY still surrounds the death of a man whose body was found on a beach with a post-mortem examination proving inconclusive.

Police are continuing to treat the death as unexplained and are liaising with other forces in Britain and Europe in an effort to solve the mystery.

The man's decomposed body - which could have been in the water for up to three months - was found washed up on the beach at Pakefield on Friday.

A post-mortem examination was carried out yesterday afternoon by a Home Office pathologist at the James Paget Hospital in Gorleston.

However, it did not reveal a cause of death and Suffolk police are now concentrating their efforts on trying to identify the man.

He is thought to have been aged between 30 and 55, about 6ft 1in tall, of slim build and with mid-brown hair.

Officers have already begun to gather information on missing persons of a similar description and are contacting other police forces in the UK and the Continent to identify possible matches.

Samples will also be sent for DNA analysis and it is hoped these and dental records may help identify the man.

Police were called to the beach in Pakefield shortly after 10am on Friday when a man walking his dog made the gruesome discovery about 200 metres south of Grand Avenue.

Lowestoft coroner George Leguen de Lacroix has been informed of the discovery and an inquest is likely to be held at a later date.
