TWO motorists were in hospital last night, with one fighting for their life, after a head-on collision between two cars.

Four people were injured in the collision, which happened on the A1092 between Long Melford and Clare just before 2pm yesterday.

Fire crews and paramedics battled to free the driver and passenger of a Fiat Marea after it was involved in a collision with an Isuzu pick-up.

The driver and passenger of the Isuzu were able to escape from their vehicle and were also taken to West Suffolk Hospital for treatment to with slight injuries.

Suffolk police were unable to give any further details of the collision or of the injured people, but a force spokesman said: "A full police investigation into the accident is currently under way and at this time we do not know the reason for the collision."

The A1092 was closed for more than three hours after the accident and police appealed for anyone with information to contact Pc Roy Dade on 01473 613500.

Meanwhile, an investigation has been launched after a car collided with a railway level crossing barrier just outside Lakenheath.

Police were called to the crossing in Station Road on Saturday morning, where a male driver had escaped from the collision without injury.

A Suffolk police spokesman said the car had been recovered from the scene shortly after the incident, which happened in thick fog, and it had not disrupted train services.

The Crown Prosecution Service will now decide whether the man, who is believed to live in the Lakenheath area, will face any charges as a result of the collision.

No-one at Network Rail was available for comment.
