CONSERVATIVES in Norfolk South-West will meet tomorrow > to choose a successor to former Education Secretary Gillian Shephard, who has decided not to defend her 9,366 majority because of her husband's ill health.

More than 250 people applied for the vacancy in what is one of the Tories' safest seats, centred on Thetford.

The final four are: Nick Hurd – the son of former Foreign Secretary Lord (Douglas Hurd) – who is chief of staff to South Suffolk MP Tim Yeo, the shadow Environment and Transport Secretary; Kit Malthouse, a chartered accountant and Deputy Leader of Westminster city council; Christopher Fraser, former MP for Mid-Dorset and Poole North; and Nick Boys Smith, who contested Walthamstow at the last election.
