TRICKSTERS operating a cash machine scam have tricked a 37-year-old man out of £500.
Police are now warning people to be on their guard when using ATMs following Wednesday's incident in Thetford.
The man, who lives in the town, was using a machine at Sainsburys, on Norwich Road at around 11am when his card was "swallowed" by the ATM.
It is believed it was then recovered by a man and a woman close by, who used the stolen card to withdraw the money from the victim's account.
"The offenders doctored the ATM so it appeared to swallow the card," said a spokesman for Norfolk Police. "They then typed in the victim's pin number, retrieved the card and withdrew money from his account.
"People should be aware of who is behind them or observing them when using a machine, and prevent others seeing their pin number. They should never re-enter their pin on somebody else's advice."
The man seen near the scene is described as white, around 5ft 11ins tall and 40-years-old. He was of thin build, and had blonde collar length hair.
The woman was also white, 5ft 7ins tall and around 27-years-old. She had short brown hair and wore brown trousers and a striped top.
