THREE villages in north Suffolk should not be subject to major housing developments, councillors are claiming.

Concerns were raised after Wrentham, Wangford and Blundeston were possibly earmarked for further development in the Waveney Local Plan.

Neither Wrentham or Wangford, which both straddle the A12 between Southwold and Lowestoft, has a primary school, adding to Suffolk County Council's fears over more housing.

Members of council's sustainable Suffolk overview and scrutiny committee yesterdayagreed to ask Waveney District Council for "further justification" to the inclusion of the villages in the plan.

The committee also called for a number of modifications to the Local Plan, including improved access to Lowestoft Port and highway schemes for Denmark Road in the town.

Don Ayre, assistant director of environment and transport, said: "We are not convinced the proposals for additional housing in some villages are justified, particularly in those villages which do not have primary schools."

Mr Ayre said the villages might not be appropriate for "significant-sized housing estates".

He added there were transport issues in the Waveney Local Plan which were "not consistent" with the county council's transport plan.

Waveney District Council could adopt the Local Plan in principle later this year, which would act as a base for a definitive plan drawn up under new planning guidelines next year.

The county council's representations on the draft plan will be referred to its executive committee on April 1.

The current Waveney Local Plan lasts until 2006.
