Firefighters were put on “water rescue” alert in Ipswich this evening - after a suspected shoplifter tried to wade across the River Gipping
Suffolk police said the fire service had been called after a man suspected of shoplifting ran away.
“He waded across the river and was arrested,” said a police spokesman.
Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) said six of its appliances had been sent to the Yarmouth Road area.
Two crews from Ipswich East, three from Princes Street in the town and one from Woodbridge attended.
SFRS said the call came in shortly after 6pm.
A fire service spokesman said the crews had been called as a precaution but were not needed on arrival.
