Dozens of firefighters responded to reports of a fire in a high rise block of flats in central Ipswich this evening.
Pumps from Ipswich East, Holbrook, Woodbridge, Princes Street, Felixstowe and Hadleigh were called to Dock Street close to the Waterfront area of the town shortly after 6.30pm today.
They arrived shortly afterwards to find no trace of smoke or fire in the block and recorded the report as a false alarm.
A fire service spokeswoman said a large number of resources were sent to the fire because it was reported in a high rise building.
She added: “Crews were sent to Dock Street to reports of a fire in a high rise residential building but following enquiries it was confirmed to be a false alarm.
“They received the call at 6.36pm and had left the vicinity by the time a stop was called at 6.52pm.
“Nine vehicles were dispatched due to the nature of the building which was a high rise block.”
Witnesses reported hearing several sirens in the area.
