Members of a Suffolk-based fitness team have raised more than £7,000 for Ipswich Hospital’s neonatal and paediatric wards after completing the Three Peaks Challenge in just 22 hours.
It means that Airborne Fit, based in Martlesham, completed the feat - which saw them climb Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon and travel between them - in the fastest time recorded for two years.
Due to poor weather conditions, the team was forced to summit Ben Nevis, Scotland, upon arrival at 5pm. Battling through darkness, wind and rain, they then returned to England to climb Scafell Pike, followed by Snowdon in Wales before 5pm on Saturday.
Airborne Fit member Sarah Stephens said it was their team spirit which saw the group through. “We didn’t expect to be climbing at 5pm on Friday night, but with so much preparation going into training and fundraising, we weren’t going to give up,” she said. “We made a team decision to start climbing as soon as we reached Ben Nevis, and supported each other through every summit which resulted in our fantastic final time.”
All funds raised will go towards brain and heart scanners for the neonatal and paediatric units at Ipswich Hospital, with many of the participants having received support from the wards in previous years.
They had initially aimed to raise £3,000, but smashed their fundraising target after a family fun day in August.
