Historic photos of Ipswich town centre’s most iconic buildings have been retaken by photographer and history enthusiast David Kindred to show how much the street scape has changed over the last century.

He said: “I got as close to the same position as traffic and new buildings allow.”

Here we show Upper Brook Street as it was in the early years of the 20th century.

Shops from the right included George Garrett china shop, Phillip Squirrell draper and Pizzey’s hairdressers. At the corner of Carr Street was Pavior and Company drapers.

The second image shows the street as it is now.

David added: “The dock area of Ipswich has not only seen many of the buildings replaced, but when it was photographed in 1965 it was a busy port with grain arriving at R and W Pauls and Cranfield Brothers, coal for the gas works and Ransomes Sims and Jefferies exporting agricultural machinery from their Orwell Works on the quayside.

“Now it is mostly leisure and residential with the university building on the site of the Eastern Counties Farmers silo near Coprolite Street.

“Shopping in the town centre has also changed and some of the small specialist shops, like drapers, china dealers and tea stores, have gone.
