As part of our ongoing series to promote businesses in Felixstowe, today we highlight a new restaurant in a prime position on the seafront.
The former Tourist Information Centre next to the Town Hall in Undercliff Road West has a new lease of life at last – having opened as a Delphine’s Diner.
Work on the premises has been taking place for some months and residents have been very excited to see inside the new eatery.
The beautiful 1930s building – one of the last Art Deco properties on the resort’s seafront – has been many things over the years, including an ice cream parlour and tea room in the 1930s to 1960s.
For restaurant owner Caroline Tuffrey it is her second Delphine’s Diner, having run her first little, independent vintage American diner providing excellent quality local ingredients in a diner style to the people of Aldeburgh for nearly five years.
Speaking about the new venture at Felixstowe She said: “Boasting a whopping 110 seats inside and out, we’ve lost none of the authentic vintage look, in fact most of the accessories and many of the the fittings are original from the 1940s and 1950s.
“Our bespoke formica bar features three lit portholes with floating fish, mermaids and sparkly seaweeds! Our waitresses are dressed in authentic uniforms with frilly pinnies.
“Our thick ice cream shakes – made from Suffolk ice cream and Rossi from Southend, a childhood favourite of mine – are served in original sundae glasses and topped with a swirl of fresh whipped cream and our extensive menu features American slang of the era. It really is a sight to see.”
The restaurant serves a wide ranging menu including burgers made from fresh, 100% Suffolk beef, 11” Voodoo Hounds (beechwood smoked huge hotdog with melted cheese, Kansas BBQ sauce, Jalapeños and fried onions served with skin on fried, homemade ‘slaw and salad) and large American breakfasts.
