The A134 at Leavenheath will be closed until Friday following a burst water main, Anglian Water has confirmed.
The road was closed on Sunday following a burst pipe in Leavenheath, which left a number of homes in the area without water.
Anglian Water had earlier said it hoped to reopen the road by Tuesday, but due to the "complex nature" of the repair, it is now likely to be closed until Friday.
The closure stretches from the junction with Plough Lane in Leavenheath all the way up to St Matthew's Church.
A spokesman for Anglian Water said: "Our teams are currently working to repair a section of damaged road surface on the A134 following a burst water main in Leavenheath, Colchester.
"A road closure is currently in place to allow for the safety of our staff and local road users while repairs to the road surface are carried out. "However, due to the complex nature of the reinstatement, we anticipate the road to be reopened by Friday.
"We are sorry for any disruption this may cause and we'd like to thank local residents for their patience while we complete these vital works."
The burst pipe disrupted people living in villages nearby in Leavenheath, Honey Tye, Nayland and Wissington.
