The annual carols by candlelight service held at St Edmundsbury Cathedral raised money for a charity which supports vulnerable children across the country.

The free event, which took place on Saturday, December 15, involved all of the cathedral’s five choirs and donations were taken throughout the evening to support the work of The Children’s Society.

The family-friendly service attracted a large audience, who enjoyed a variety of different carols.

Canon Philip Banks, precentor at the cathedral, said: “This fantastic service showcases our variety of choirs and also allows us to give thanks for the amazing work of The Children’s Society in their tireless support for children who are without families and homes of their own.”

The longest night service will take place at the cathedral tomorrow at 3.30pm, and there will be a traditional service of nine lessons and carols on Sunday at 7pm.

Midnight mass, led by the cathedral choirs, will take place on Christmas Eve at 11pm.
