In this week’s Ipswich Town nostalgia, we look back to April 5, 1999, when the Blues beat QPR 3-1 at Portman Road in front of the club’s biggest home crowd of the season, 22,162.
The visitors took the lead inside four minutes as the unmarked former Town forward Chris Kiwomya met an early free-kick from Paul Murray with an easy glancing header past Town keeper Richard Wright.
But Ipswich drew level not long after when David Johnson met a deep cross from Jim Magilton with a towering far-post header after 12 minutes for his 13th goal of the ‘98-99 season.
After the interval, the Blues took the lead via James Scowcroft on 65 minutes following the award of a contentious free-kick on the left. Mark Venus took it with his left boot and found Scowcroft to finish.
Ipswich added their third goal when Rangers keeper Ludek Miklosko failed to deal with a corner, Johnson poked the ball wide to Matt Holland on the left and he unleashed a 20-yard drive into the top corner to secure all three points.
