The A12 has reopened after emergency services were called to reports that a bus had caught fire with passengers on board.
Police officers and firefighters were called to reports of a burning vehicle in the southbound carriageway near to Eight Ash Green, west of Colchester.
On arrival however, Essex County Fire and Rescue Service reported that the bus had suffered engine failure, resulting in lots of smoke but no fire.
Essex Police closed one lane to allow the vehicle to be recovered.
Sgt Colin Shead of Essex Police’s roads policing teams, later reported that the A12 had reopened and all passengers had been moved onto another coach, along with their luggage.
“Great team effort,” he said. “Well done everyone.”
Essex County Council’s travel alert Twitter account said traffic was queuing back to Colchester Football Stadium.
The ambulance service was also called to attend, though no injuries have been reported.
