Legendary newsreader Angela Rippon is set to be the special guest a popular Suffolk event that celebrates all that is great about the nation’s favourite pet.
This year more than 6,000 people are expected to attend Suffolk Dog Day with their pooches.
The event, sponsored by Skinners Pet Foods, now in its 11th year, raises money for Suffolk Community Foundation and has contributed over £500,000 to help the thousands of small charities and community groups that are working hard to support Suffolk communities.
It takes a year-round team commitment to make it happen, with all the committee being volunteers.
Chairman and volunteer Richard Cooper said the team works hard all year round to a tried and tested formula - but that they never stop looking at ways to keep the day fresh and interesting.
Last year Breed Parades were introduced for the first time and went down a storm, with literally dozens of Greyhounds, Labradors and Collies taking to the ring together.
It started by asking the people of Suffolk to vote for their favourites, with red carpet parades for the winners.
More than 5,000 people voted and this year, the spotlight will be given to six different breeds - from Chihuahuas and Miniature Schnauzers to Springer Spaniels and Golden Retrievers.
There is also exciting news of some extra special star dust being sprinkled at this year’s Suffolk Dog Day by a true ?national treasure?.
Perhaps Britain’s best loved newsreader and legendary for her high-kicking routines with Morecambe and Wise, Angela Rippon will be making a very special guest appearance at this year’s event.
Suffolk Community Foundation’s head of public affairs Tim Holder said the newsreader is no stranger to Suffolk and has been visiting and filming here regularly for many years.
“We’ve loved working together on several projects and she has heard all about Suffolk Dog Day and always said she’d love to come,” he said.
“So, when we heard the news that the wonderful Peter Purves was not able to be wit us for the first time ever this year, I gave Angela a call and she has come to the rescue.
“It is so kind of her to come up especially from London to spend the afternoon with us all.
“We all hope to see Peter again next year - he’s part of the family and always will be, but we know people will really enjoy meeting Angela.
Mr Cooper added: “?The team has worked incredibly hard to make sure that it is, we plan for the whole family to have a great day out in the beautiful surroundings of Helmingham Hall, but most especially those on four legs obviously.”
There will be new canine attractions, brand new demonstrations including Lowestoft Dog Display Team, fun dog agility activities including fly ball and dog scurry to retrieve a dummy from the lake.
There will be the chance to join in with numerous classes including Best Puppy, Best Rescue, Dog with the Waggiest Tail, Best Veteran, Suffolk’s Next Top Model and the coveted top Jewel In The Crown - Best in Show, then their all the fabulous food and drink and shopping to enjoy.
Mr Holder added: “?It’s not Crufts, it’s not about doggy excellence - it’s an event by the people of Suffolk for the people of Suffolk.
“It’s brilliant fun and every penny that’s raised helps someone else in Suffolk who is perhaps not able to enjoy life as much. It’?s perfect, what’s not to love?” Tickets are available on the day priced at £10 for adults and £5 for children, with a family ticket for £25.
