Organisers of an annual two-day event in Bury St Edmunds are delighted to announce they will be able to deliver one of the event’s star attractions tomorrow.
The popular urban beach at the town’s 21st Whitsun Fayre did not go ahead today after a mix-up meant 13 tonnes of play sand was not delivered.
Now Mark Cordell, chief executive of organisers OurBuryStEdmunds, has said that the attraction will be in place tomorrow.
“Although we were naturally disappointed not to have the beach in place for Sunday, the fantastic weather and range of different free activities at the Whitsun Fayre meant that it was still a fantastic family day out and there were lots of happy visitors throughout the day,” he added.
“Monday is expected to be mainly warm and sunny so with the added attraction of the urban beach there’s every reason to visit the Whitsun Fayre. And if you missed the beach on Sunday – the whole event, including the beach, has free admission on Monday.”
Mr Cordell also said the mini-farm had been moved from Abbeygate Street to the Cornhill – outside Moyse’s Hall – in place of where the urban beach should have been.
Despite the lack of sand, hundreds of people descended on the town centre for the first day of the event to enjoy the wide range of stalls, entertainment, and animals.
The fayre also offers a flower and plant market, as well as artisan food and craft stalls on Angel Hill and free street entertainment throughout the town centre.
Children can get their faces painted, as well as taking part in Sense-O-Matic experiments or an astronomy workshop.
There is also the opportunity for people to get pictures taken with a Captain Jack Sparrow lookalike, from the Pirates of the Caribbean films.
Mr Cordell added: “It has been a pretty good first day turnout, the weather has been kind and the artisan food and craft stalls on the Angel Hill have gone down really well.”
The weather for bank holiday Monday is expected to be warm and sunny, with highs of 27C.
However, there is a chance of isolated thunderstorms across parts of Suffolk and Essex in the afternoon.
A Met Office yellow weather warning for rain was issued between midnight and 6am today, with thunderstorms expected across the east.
A further yellow warning for rain is in place for today from 1pm until 8pm.
