Guns were fired with paper bullets and cannons were loaded and primed as the 70 British and French soldiers fought it out in a cacophony of loud bangs and shots.

They had turned up on Friday to set up their camp as part of a scenario for the battle which featured French troops landing on the Suffolk coast line. Their transport went aground after bad weather and were at large in the area raiding small homesteads and pillaging whatever they could get their hands on.

Jim Paylor, the brigade quartermaster and organiser of the event, praised the estate for hosting them after it was cancelled over Easter because of the wet weather.

And he said: “We have been coming here for the past 12 years and this area is beautiful for us and we love coming here because the people are so lovely and we have such a great time.”
