It’s all in the name for a Sudbury resident who has celebrated a very special milestone birthday.

Agnes Milestone received a card from the Queen and a visit from the mayor on her 100th birthday.

She was born in Hamburg in 1917, where she later met her future husband Bob who was stationed there with the Army after the Second World War.

They married on New Year’s Eve in 1949.

At first she spoke only German and had a difficult time at first, but soon learned to speak English.

She had no children, but a number of her nieces went to her birthday party. She and Bob initially settled in North Yorkshire and ran several post offices. They were married for 42 years until Bob died in 1992. They retired to Sudbury to be closer to Bob’s sister and also to Harwich, so Agnes could visit her family.

Friends and family attended her party at Mellish House care home along with Sudbury’s mayor Sue Ayres.
