Ipswich Town boss Mick McCarthy believes today’s 2-2 draw with rock-bottom Rotherham United at Portman Road could be a turning point in the Blues’ season.

David McGoldrick scored from 30 yards with the last kick of the game to spare McCarthy’s blushes and prevent Rotherham, who had not picked up a single away point this season prior to the game, winning just their fourth away game of 2016 and a second of the year at Portman Road.

Freddie Sears had given the hosts a dream start, finishing Tom Lawrence’s free-kick after three minutes, but Danny Ward then capitalised twice on poor defending from Town, in the seventh and 48th minutes, to put the Millers in front.

After an encouraging first half, Town rarely threatened in the second period and were indebted to McGoldrick’s second league goal of the season to salvage a point.

After the game, McCarthy said: “I am disappointed with the second half, not with the first as I thought we played some good football and created some good chances.

“They scored their equaliser by keeping on top us, Chambo was knocked to the ground so was playing them onside, and then we had the Keystone Cops moment at the start of the second half, the two centre-backs (Berra and Webster) collided with each other and someone else, and we never got chance to replicate our performance.

“We were nervous and cautious and they could sit back and protect their goal, but thankfully they did not catch us on the break.

“We kept going, that’s the biggest thing you can probably take from it and if you are ever looking for a point in a season to turn a bad moment around, maybe that could be it, a wonderful strike from a really good player.”

McCarthy was booed heavily on the final whistle and fans had previously delivered chants of “What a load of rubbish” and “Your football is s**t”, leaving McCarthy to respond: “We did not play well (in the second half) I fully understand that but I have had three years, nine months of relative success here, with people thinking I’ve done a good job and shouting “Super Mick”.

“I don’t get carried away (by boos or cheers) I treat them both as imposters.

“I and the players will continue to try and turn the season around. I am hoping today, as disappointing as it seems, it might just be the positive point.”
