Ipswich Town are closing in on the addition of a striker ahead of tonight’s 11pm transfer deadline, but they won’t be signing Barnsley’s Marley Watkins after the club had a £1m bid rejected.
The Blues did lodge a seven-figure offer for the versatile attacking midfielder/forward, as reported by Sky Sports last night, but it was knocked back and they have moved on to other targets.
The EADT and Ipswich Star understands that a deal for a striker is at an advanced stage, with possibly one other signing also due before close of play this evening.
London-born Watkins, 25, grew up in Swansea and started out at Cheltenham. He had two years of playing in non-league, with Bath and Hereford, before switching to Scotland to play for Inverness Caledonian Thistle. There he scored in a Cup Fianl win against Falkirk.
A move to League One Barnsley followed in the summer of 2015 and he scored eight goals as the Tykes won the Football League Trophy and secured promotion via the play-offs. He’s started this season in fine form, scoring twice – including at Portman Road on the opening weekend.
