Firefighters in Chelmsford last night tackled a spate of deliberate car fires in the city.

An appliance was first called at 7.49pm to Saint Nazaire Road, to an incident involving two cars on fire. Firefighters used one hose reel jet to extinguish the blaze.

A second fire engine was then sent to Tugby Place at 8.08pm, where one car was on fire. The crew used one hose reel jet to extinguish the fire by 8.22pm.

Two minutes later, the same crew was tasked to Flintwich Manor after a car was set alight. One hose reel jet was used to put the fire out by 8.50pm.

While the second crew was tackling the third blaze, the first crew was then sent to Drood Close at 8.39pm where another car was on fire. One hose reel jet was again used by firefighters, extinguishing the blaze by 8.51pm.

A spokesman for Essex County Fire and Rescue Service said: “In each incident, the cars were 100% alight.

“Police have been in attendance at each incident scene.”
