Customers of EE in Felixstowe who have been without a phone signal for more than three weeks should have services restored again within the next few days.

The company was inundated with complaints after having to remove a mobile tower from a site it has rented on a seafront building as the property is to be redeveloped by its owners, which has left the town centre area without coverage.

Suffolk Coastal MP Therese Coffey took up the case on behalf of her constituents and has now been given assurances by EE that they aim to have replacement 3G coverage in place in Felixstowe by the end of the week.

Dr Coffey said the telecoms company had confirmed that a temporary fix should be in place within days with a permanent resiting of its mast set for later this year.

EE stated that once 3G is live, then it will take steps in the following weeks to add 4G.

Dr Coffey said: “I appreciate that this has been a frustrating time for local residents but I am pleased EE has now been able to secure a temporary fix.

“They have given me assurances that their customer service team will continue to contact each customer to discuss their individual circumstances and I have pressed the case that affected customers should be compensated.”

The mast at Cliff House, in Hamilton Gardens, was switched off on January 5. EE has consent for a new 12.5m monopole to support telecommunications antennae for shared use by itself and Three, plus the installation of six ground-based equipment cabinets, to provide 2G, 3G and 4G mobile services, at Felixstowe Lawn Tennis Club, but it is not known whether this will be the site of the permanent mast.

The company has identified customers who may be affected by the current problems, and is contacting each of them to address any concerns and offer a free signal box that connects to broadband to enable them to make and receive calls.
