An opticians has donated hi-vis vests for pupils to use as they walk to school.
The Halstead Wardale Williams branch gave 60 of the high-visibility garments to St Giles’ Primary School in Great Maplestead for its walking bus.
The school introduced the walking bus last year after concerns about safety as children headed to classes, particularly along rural roads with no pavements.
Headteacher Jinnie Nichols said: “The walking bus has had a very positive impact, reducing the numbers of parked cars as well as developing a strong feeling of safety for children and parents.
“School staff and parent volunteers work together as a team to escort children to school.
“With the dark winter months fast approaching these high visibility vests will be invaluable, making it even safer for the children as they make their way to school.
“We are very grateful to Wardale Williams for supporting us in this way.”
Practice manager Mark Thompson handed over the vests to the school and said: “We always try to support local schools and organisations wherever possible and we are delighted to help make the children just a little safer when walking near roads.”
Similar donations are also to be made to the Earls Colne Primary School and the De Vere Primary School in Castle Hedingham.
