Two primary school pupils are today preparing to hold their tongues for 24 hours in a bid to raise money to support young people whose parents are going through cancer treatment.

10-year-old Lucie Jenkins, whose mum Briony has secondary breast cancer, will begin her sponsored silence with friend Freya Howlett during an assembly at Tattingstone Primary School this afternoon.

The girls are raising funds for the Somersham Ward Support Group and the money they make, which so far stands at more than £1,200, will be particularly in aid of Hilary Wilson, the Macmillan family support worker at Ipswich Hospital.

Lucie, of Harkstead, said: “I want to help people like me and because Hilary has given me one-on-one support, I want to return the favour for her. Even if people can give £20, it is a lot of money and it will help.”

Briony was diagnosed with breast cancer six years ago but despite being successfully treated, she now has secondary breast cancer and is on medication.

The girls have set themselves the target of raising £1,600 and so far funds have come in from people across the world. Their fundraising silence will end tomorrow afternoon.
