Firefighters are still investigating the cause of a fire which spread from a caravan and ripped through two homes, leaving them heavily damaged and their roofs completely destroyed.

Around 20 homes had to be evacuated yesterday (Monday, June 1) in Reydon after neighbours described hearing explosions and then seeing two homes in Windsor Road engulfed in flames thought to be up to 30ft high.

The fire service sent six crews and called for an aerial unit from Norfolk when it saw the scale of the fire - and called police to clear the area when it saw canisters which they thought could contain dangerous gases.

Residents were allowed back in their homes at about 5pm but the fire was not under control until 6.45pm, as firefighters could only fight the blaze from the outside due to fears the roofs of the properties could collapse.

A spokesman for Suffolk Police said: “Initially police were not required to attend but a short time later it became apparent that the fire had spread to a neighbouring home and to nearby garages, that potentially contained domestic gas bottles that could present a danger, and police were asked to carry out an evacuation of the immediate area.

“The fire also fractured the gas main and the area was cordoned off and about 20 homes were briefly evacuated while the area was made safe. Residents were allowed back into their homes around 5pm.

“The cause of the blaze – which destroyed the two properties, actually on Windsor Road – is currently being investigated.”
