Rare goose reported to have roosted in Suffolk nature reserve

The lesser white fronted goose was reported to have crossed the North Sea on Tuesday night and taken up residence at RSPB Minsmere on the county’s coastline.

Publicity officer Ian Barthorpe said the bird was a rapidly declining species that usually winters in the Black Sea and is very rarely spotted in Britain. The goose is likely to be one of the most sought-after species for spotters taking part in tomorrow’s winter wildlife walks at the reserve.

Mr Barthorpe said the guided walks were held to give visitors a flavour for the “magic of Minsmere” and an insight into wildlife found in the reserve.

“It’s about helping people to enjoy the reserve as much as possible and get a little extra confidence identifying the species,” he added.

Other interesting species on the reserve currently include snew, whooper swans and kingfishers.

The walk sets off at 9.30am from the reserve’s visitor centre.
