Coastal lifesavers in Suffolk and Essex have paid thanks for the “extremely generous” six figure legacy left by a married couple in their will.

Robert and Yvonne Beardsley-Colmer left £125,000 to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), which their family recently presented to Harwich and Aldeburgh crews.

Trish Leggett, from Kesgrave said her father and step-mother, whose ashes were scattered at sea by the Harwich lifeboat crew in May, had wanted the money to go directly to the frontline.

“The crews are such dedicated people, they always seem to go that little bit further, they are smashing guys and they work horrendous hours, so it’s very well deserved,” she said.

A spokesman for the Harwich crew said: “It’s an extremely generous and extremely welcome donation.”

Harwich received £75,000; Aldeburgh received £25,000 and a further £25,000 went to Ramsgate.
