Voters in Essex County Council’s Brightlingsea division will go to the polls next month – the same day as Clacton residents elect their new MP.
The seat is up for grabs after councillor Roger Lord sensationally resigned from his post as councillor and from UKIP on Wednesday.
County Hall has confirmed the by-election will take place on October 9 – the same date as the Westminster by-election for the Clacton seat held by Douglas Carswell until his shock defection from the Conservatives to UKIP next week.
People have until Tuesday September 23 to register to vote.
Much of the Brightlingsea county division falls within Bernard Jenkin’s Parliamentary constituency, though there is some overlap with the Clacton seat at St Osyth.
