They might be one of the only clubs in the division to be part-time, but that hasn’t stopped Braintree Town from upsetting a number of full-time outfits this season.

On Thursday evening, the Iron overturned Forest Green Rovers 2-0 on their own patch, and as a result of which, moved up to 11th in the Skrill Premier.

Getting back from Gloucestershire at 2.30 Friday morning, assistant manager Keith Rowland was up to work as his job as a postman at 5.30, just three hours later.

And Rowland wouldn’t have it any other way.

“All the lads are in the same boat,” said Rowland.

“It’s such a great feeling when we win away from home.

“It makes the journey back so much sweeter, even when we all know that we’ve got to be up for work in the early hours.

“I think only us, Welling and Hyde are part-time and that’s the way we look at it.

“You’re either part-time or not, there’s no in-between.

“The lads’ jobs are the priority, we’ve just come out of a hard time (economically), and their jobs are the most important thing.”

After seeing their fixture-list decimated earlier on in the season following postponement after postponement, Braintree have certainly done their talking on the pitch of late.

Thursday’s victory was their fourth success in their last six outings, with the Iron drawing creditable draws in the other two fixtures to maintain their unbeaten record since returning to action.

“I’ve been quite surprised by how well we have done of late,” admitted Rowland.

“Thursday was an excellent defensive display and although we rode our luck a little, it was a great win.

“Before that though, I thought we were unlucky not to get five wins out of five.

“In fact, every management team afterwards hasn’t had any complaints about the result which is nice because sometimes I don’t think we get the credit we deserve.”

Braintree now have 15 fixtures to fulfil before the end of the season on April 26, including a gruelling seven days which sees separate trips to northern-based trio Welling, Gateshead and Southport, sandwiched in-between a home game against Nuneaton.

“That week will be hard work but there’s not much we can do about it,” confessed Rowland.

“We’ll be travelling back and forth to each one of those games.

“We’ve had just one overnight stay in three years (Barrow), that’s just the way it is.”

Braintree are on the road again today as they travel to Lincoln, before welcoming the Imps to Cressing Road just four days later.

“Thursday’s win gives us great confidence going into the game,” said Rowland.

“Playing them twice in short succession isn’t ideal but it’s a nice set-up there and we’ll give it a go.”

Whatever the result, it’s clear to see that the Iron fear nobody.
