Crime is being tackled successfully at the home of racing after new figures showed the number of arrests made there is steadily dropping.

Just one arrest has been made at the Rowley Mile Racecourse in Newmarket this year compared to a peak of 14 in 2009, according to information released in a Freedom of Information request.

The figures provided by Suffolk Constabulary showed there were six arrests made at the course in 2008. However, in 2011 there were only two arrests, while in 2010 and 2012 only one arrest was made throughout each racing season.

The Rowley Mile and July Course are policed between Suffolk Constabulary and Cambridgeshire Constabulary. Neither force could provide figures for the July Course.

A spokesman from Suffolk Constabulary said officers were being called to the racecourse on fewer occasions, adding: “Suffolk police support the security at Newmarket Racecourse and will send resources whenever they are required.”

The Jockey Club, which runs the racecourse, was unavailable for comment.

The arrest this year came following an allegation of sexual assault in May, although no further action was taken.

The most common offence has been possession of cocaine. All six arrests made in 2008 were for this offence, as were four of the arrests made in 2009. All of them resulted in cautions being issued.

In 2009, seven people were arrested over the same incident for causing an affray, although no further action was taken. Another person was arrested for causing harassment over the same incident, and they were penalised with a penalty notice.

In December of the same year, two people were arrested and later charged with making a threat to kill and threatening violence. Three people have been arrested for assault, while only one arrest has been made for being drunk and disorderly in a public place.
