Horses have been killed after being struck by a vehicle after wandering into a road.
Officers were called to the A143 at Botesdale just after 12.15am on Saturday to reports of a horse in the road.
Moments later a second call was received saying a vehicle had been in collision with the animal.
Officers arrived minutes later to find two horses had been involved in collisions. One died after the crash, the other had to be destroyed at the scene after sustaining serious injuries.
Police are reminding members of the public who go out walking in the countryside to remember to close and secure gates behind them after the incident.
An ambulance was called but no-one was taken to hospital.
Police began an enquiry to locate the owner of the horses and to determine what occurred.
They received a call around 10.20am reporting the horses missing from a field. It is thought the horses may have escaped from the field, which has a public right of way through it, after a gate was left open.
It is also possible there may have been an attempt to take the animals.
Anyone with information about the incident should call Pc Stephen Duffell at Suffolk police on 101.
