Statues celebrating the achievements of two of Ipswich Town’s greatest managers will be included in a new book paying tribute to sporting monuments.

The tributes of Sir Alf Ramsey and Sir Bobby Robson, both situated outside Portman Road, will feature alongside the likes of WG Grace, Stanley Matthews and Tom Finney in Immortals of British Sports: A Celebration of Britain’s Sporting History Through Sculpture.

The book’s writer, Ian Hewitt and photographer, Sampson Lloyd, travelled across the country searching for statues of sportsmen and women.

Mr Hewitt said: “A statue is, of course, just one tangible way of commemorating an individual or event.

“It expresses, though, an importance and emotion which we reserve for the truly exceptional.

“A well-designed sculpture or memorial, capturing an individual characteristic, can also add a distinctive and lasting dimension to our memory.”

Sir Alf, who guided England to World Cup glory in 1966, had his bronze statue created by Suffolk scupltor Sean Hedges-Quinn. It was unveiled in 2002.

Mr Quinn also created the statue for Sir Bobby Robson, who led Town to FA Cup glory in 1978.
