Punters at the country’s smallest pub - which happens to be in Bury St Edmunds - did a double take when they were joined for a drink by a famous comedian.

Today, Ross Noble turned up in at the Nutshell in the Traverse with his television crew after a Bury woman tweeted him and suggested he pay it a visit.

He tried to fit in as many people as possible and played games in the tight space.

The footage is due to be shown on his television show ‘Ross Noble Freewheeling,’ which is being aired on the channel Dave in the autumn.

The programme sees Ross and his team travel all over the country as they are directed by the public’s Twitter messages on what to do next.

The 37-year-old, who has been to the Nutshell before, said: “I have seen pretty much all of the country now. There’s a lot of places that are identical versions, but Bury St Edmunds has a lot of history to it. It’s got something a bit different which is always nice to see.”

Sarah Gribble, 40, who lives off Hollow Road, said: “They were looking for suggestions of what to do for the end of the programme and I said ‘why don’t you come to the Nutshell and see how many people you can squeeze in it?’.

“It seemed like a suggestion to me and they actually listened.”

Ross said he thought ‘what better idea then to visit the smallest pub in the country?’ to film the closing ceremony for the show.

“As we are filming anyone nearby just becomes part of the show whether they like it or not,” he added.
