It is believed the man had a knife and the woman suffered a cut to her hand in the incident.

The woman, in her late 30s, who was walking with two children, was near the bowling green when a man walked up to her and told her to hand over her purse.

When she said no the man attacked her and then fled with her purse, heading off towards the war memorial.

The police helicopter was scrambled to try and locate the man.

She was shocked and the children distressed and they were checked over by ambulance personnel at the scene.

The robber is described as black, about 6ft tall, of slim build, with a long face, big forehead and a clear complexion.

A police spokeswoman said: “He is thought to be aged in his 20s to 30s, had a two to three inch Afro-style haircut, and was wearing a grey jacket in a thin waterproof material that was zipped up to his neck.

“The Efit shows an image of the offender as put together by the woman.”

The incident happened about 11am yesterday.

Anyone who was at the mansion yesterday morning and saw the man, or has any information about who he is should contact police as soon as possible.

People with information can call Ipswich CID on 101 – or Crimestoppers, anonymously if required, on 0800 555 111.
