ENGLAND cricket captain Alastair Cook has been awarded an honorary degree from the University of Essex.
Dr Cook, as he now can be known, was brought up in Essex and learnt his cricketing trade in the county, first at Maldon Cricket Club and then onto the Essex County team in 2003.
Members of both clubs were in attendance as the world-renowned opening batsman received the reward at the university’s Colchester Campus.
University of Essex Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Jules Pretty said: “Alastair Cook has become one of Essex and England’s finest cricketers and this was a welcome opportunity to acknowledge his contribution to both the sport and the county.”
