A NEW bench has been unveiled in memory of a talented Suffolk sportsman who died in a road accident.
Friends and family of popular teenager Sam Jaggard turned out for an inaugural golf tournament – with the memorial bench unveiled at the putting green in which Sam spent many hours perfecting his skills.
The Sam Jaggard Memorial Golf Tournament took place at Southwold Golf Club, on the course where the 18-year-old had been working as a shop assistant up until he and friend Kathryn Rivett, 18, suffered fatal injuries in a car crash on the A143-A146 Norwich Road at Gillingham last July.
The event was organised by Southwold Golf Club’s professional, Robin Mann, and Sam’s mum Chris Lea, who has set up the Sam Jaggard Junior Golf Foundation Fund in conjunction with the golf club to help young players realise their potential.
Mrs Lea said: “It was a great but emotional day and the weather didn’t dampen everybody’s spirits. There was a good turn-out, including all of Sam’s friends who had teams, two teams from Southwold and a team from Suffolk county.”
Nine teams took part in the event, with the winners – Paul Booth, Gerry Martin, Terry Gunton and Alan Scovell – hailing from Southwold GC.
