HUNDREDS of calls were made to the region’s emergency services as revellers enjoyed glorious sunshine over the weekend.

Suffolk police endured one of the busiest 24 hours with nearly 1,000 calls made to the control room. Figures from 7am on Saturday to 7am on Sunday show the force received a total of 320 emergency 999 calls from members of the public compared to an average of 295.

Officers logged 613 non-urgent calls in comparison to an average of 460 in a 24-hour period.

Inspector Bob Cracknell, of Suffolk police, said: “Traditionally, call volume does increase during the summer, so this is expected, although we experienced the extreme end of this pattern this weekend.”

Thousands of people basked in the 32C (90F) sunshine at events across Suffolk over the weekend including Ipswich Maritime Festival, Felixstowe Carnival and V Festival while others headed to the coast.

Insp Cracknell added: “There are many factors that can contribute to these figures, such as the hot weather, which meant that more people were out and about and attending numerous public events.

“We would encourage people to enjoy themselves sensibly, to drink responsibly, and to ensure that they keep themselves safe whilst enjoying the summer weather.”

East of England Ambulance Service Trust received a total of 491 call-outs across Suffolk in the same time period, compared with 327 calls in Suffolk the previous week.

An EEAST spokesman said the figures were not particularly high and it was “business as usual”.
