SEVEN fire crews have tackled a blaze in the basement of a multi-storey block of flats in Newmarket.
The blaze started at just before 10.30pm last night at St Anthony Flats in Icewell Hill and crews from Newmarket, Mildenhall, Burwell in Cambridgeshire, Bury St Edmunds and Ixworth, as well as a Multistar hydraulic appliance from Bury and a command unit from Ixworth, were sent out.
A Suffolk Fire and Rescue service spokesman said: “Fire control took a single 999 call to reports of smoke in the basement of the above high rise premise in Newmarket.
“As the building is more than five floors, it is classed as a high rise building and has an enhanced attendance in the event of a fire.
“Newmarket booked in attendance at 10.32pm and established that there was a fire in the basement of the building involving an electrical cupboard and heavy smoke logging coming from the basement level.
“Crews had the incident under control by 10.56pm.”
The spokesman said that electricians and one crew stayed at the scene well into the night and that the blaze was not thought to have been started suspiciously.
